Photographs by Laura Burlton

I am a native Houstonian and have lived in the Houston/ Galveston area for most of my life. My love of photography started early on when my parents gave me my first camera, a Kodak tele-instamatic at around the age of 9. My current arsenal of cameras mostly consists of lo-fi, pinhole and toy cameras. I have continued my study of photography and art throughout my education and have attended Glassell School of Art for the last five years.

I have two young daughters and a British husband who are often subjects of my photographic musings. I have been practicing photography most of my life, while concentrating on the genre of toy camera photography for the past five years. I like the dreamy otherworldly quality that these cameras give to my photos. They seem to be out of time, like some celluloid capture of a dream. Most of my photography is of people, as I like to capture the moments when the subject is not fully aware of the camera. I often pretend to take a photo, then actually depress the shutter when the subject has finished posing. My influences have been Lewis Carroll, Julie Margaret Cameron, and Sarah Moon among many others. In the past I have worked on several projects, including Fairytales and Nightmares. These photos were influenced by the imagery one gets from reading the works of Lewis Carroll, the Brothers Grimm and other authors of folk and fairy tales. Although these books are now thought of as children’s tales, the subject matter is actually quite dark. The current project I am working on is about childhood innocence and memories.
